Kindly O Lord, A Little Humour —

such is the love of a god
The One and Only speaking
to us so small and petty here
but quietly as we are led to believe
a first century, swarthy jew —
“No time to bury your parents —
listen — I’m being poetic here —
do not take stock in friends either, ah!
these are good things, yes, and very
pleasing to my father — but know that
my father has all the hairs counted on your
head, if you believe me, and my words —
and let them crucify me twice if they make
me sound humourless — yes my father has
counted all the hairs on your head, even between
the scabs — !”
— Ah, let the love of a god whose image is a man
cloak us all
we are not here to please one another
our hearts need to be held by you o Lord
— O Lord who knows we are most abandoned
to our neighbor
— O for a god of humour!
Who didn’t always stay in the garden of Gethsemane…
