Meditation on Gould’s Goldberg Variations

Moments of infinite slowness —

Sweat cools distemper on this pale flesh —

This flesh is but a membrane to my electric soul

God gave me enough peace, to sit and listen

And rend disquiet into submission —

So let the angels speak! I said, let the angels speak —

Let their voices like soft children’s hands tear away

These cobwebs in my soul —

Allot a little light O Lord, let it hum and settle in my sour soul

Let faith confirm that earthly music can make a man for one hour whole

— Merciful is the music that consoles…
